My company is looking to enhance its own internal software and we've been
tasked with adding email fetching/storage/tagging/sending functionality to
said application. Basically creating an email client that uses our gmail
account.

After we got started with IMAP, it basically felt like we were rewriting
gmail, so we started exploring the Gmail API. The problem is in the
description of the API google says "Note: The Gmail API should not be used
to replace IMAP for full-fledged email client access. Instead, see IMAP and
SMTP."

So we're kind of at a cross roads on which technology to use. It would be
nice to have access to all the tools the gmail API gives you, but with our
lack of expertise with IMAP, we're not sure what the pro's and cons of each
integration method are.

Which direction would you take? IMAP or Gmail API? What would be the pros
and cons of each?

Thanks.
