I started listening to this podcast a while back and found the idea of value based pricing fascinating. It actually helped me understand some things about my full time job. The idea is you work closely with the client to help them understand what they want, and how much money it's going to save/make. Then you ask for an amount based on that, rather than your time. I think Mac's idea of charging them upfront for design work is a good one. Then you can bid on the full project using Value-Based Pricing. I'm not sure that value based pricing is the best idea for you, but it's a good idea to be aware of.
