What are you expecting people with legacy data to do? This sounds like a deal breaker for most any real world web application.

I'm not focusing on that user base right now. All things considered, this is a pretty simplistic sort of thing to deal with, and I expect there are a variety of different implementation strategies that would get the job done.
I'm curious, what user base are you focusing on?

What's relevant here is that I'm focusing on building applications from scratch. I don't really care if that rules out most applications. You have to start somewhere.
