What are you expecting people with legacy data to do? This sounds
like a deal breaker for most any real world web application.
I'm not focusing on that user base right now. All things considered,
this is a pretty simplistic sort of thing to deal with, and I expect
there are a variety of different implementation strategies that would
get the job done.

What's relevant here is that I'm focusing on building applications from
scratch. I don't really care if that rules out most applications. You
have to start somewhere.
