SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test)

Essentially, the SDET would focus on quality from a developer’s
perspective, and would be a recognized expert in automated unit and
integration testing. At a high level, the SDET would:

   - consult with development staff on automated unit/integration test
   practices
   - develop and extend automated unit/integration test frameworks for use
   by the development teams
   - pair with developers to write specific unit and integration tests for
   the sake of skill building
   - identify technical debt and opportunities for refactoring
   - demonstrate ways to evolve legacy code with weak separation of
concerns into a more modular and testable form
   - be able to perform code reviews and make recommendations for code
   improvements

The above would be done in the context of large scale web applications
built using C#.

The SDET needs strong technical skills, along with strong communication and
interpersonal skills in order to educate, advocate, and influence. The
amount of automation needed is so large that the SDET will not be able to
build it on her/his own. Rather, the SDET must help others to build this
automation by providing related tools (such as frameworks) and other
guidance. Part of the SDET’s mission is to help evolve the culture of teams
that are in the early stages of leveraging automated unit/integration
testing and deploying effective continuous integration processes.

The SDET will probably spend a lot of time following this pattern:

   - parachute into a particular scrum team that needs some help with their
   automated testing
   - work with them for a while to build up their automated testing
abilities and evolve their code into a more testable form
   - get them to the point where they have solid fundamentals in place and
   can proceed on their own
   - begin the process again with a new team
