TITLE- Research Data Scientist (Geospatial) - Senior

Location:  Creve Coeur, MO

Duration:  12 months

 


*Description *
The Data Scientist will design and test algorithms and conduct prototyping 
to evaluate possible scenarios leveraging computational and statistical 
techniques for the development of novel approaches for high-throughput data 
analyses. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work 
collaboratively with interdisciplinary scientists internal and external to 
Monsanto, organize challenging problems, develop new solutions, and work 
with business & development teams to ensure these solutions deliver value. 
Requires a degree or 5-10 years experience in field or related area. 

Geospatial Data Scientist 


The Geospatial Data Scientist will be focused on integrating weather, soil, 
and hydrology data into R&D and production crop field systems as part of 
Monsantos Location360 team. The successful candidate will understand 
environmental datas influence on agriculture, how to translate quantitative 
data into agronomic significant information, and common agricultural 
practices for commercial row crop farming. 

The successful candidate will be experienced in working across R&D groups, 
have prior experience with applying soil, meteorology, and hydrology data 
to agricultural needs including environmental classification, plant growth 
models, soil moisture, disease risks, and/or irrigation planning. 


*Key responsibilities include: *
Understanding current and incorporating new environmental data sets 
Proactively integrating environmental data into field management systems 
Staying abreast of public domain data sets that are relevant to Monsantos 
biotechnology pipeline. 
Partnerships within Monsanto data manager communities to brings needed data 
sets into GIS and Big Data analytical environments 
Leadership in advancing Monsantos understanding of environmental influences 
on field performance and risk factors. 


*Minimum Requirements: *
Bachelors degree in Agronomy, Biology, Computer Science, Electrical 
Engineering, Meteorology, or relevant work experience with environmental 
data in agriculture applications. 
Minimum of 3 years experience with Data Science role 
Minimum of 1 year experience with Hadoop, Neo4J or other NoSQL/ Big Data 
platform 
Minimum of 2 year experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) such 
as ESRI Desktop, Oracle Spatial, or GeoServer. 
Minimum of 3 years experience with Java, Scala, Python, or similar 
development language. 
Demonstrated strong SQL skills 
Demonstrated strong Unix scripting skills 
Demonstrated experience utilizing REST, SOAP, or other data service 
methodologies 
Demonstrated experience adapting to new technologies 


*Desirable qualifications: *
Strong demonstrated knowledge of agriculture and/or agriculture oriented 
businesses 
Experience with plant growth numerical models 
Experience creating cloud computing solutions and web applications 
leveraging public and private APIs
