Have you seen Growl for OS X?
There is also a page on our wiki about redesigning the
notification area.

I do not underestand why Nautilus ties up two totally
different concepts in its zoom function: icon size and
amount of information displayed. If anything, the
reverse would make more sense: icons smaller when
there is more text in the label.
I filed a bug about this but I don't think I explained
it properly, as it has been ignored/
