FWIW, this area is on our ad-hoc list of "patterns" to think about for the next version of the HIG (I called it "in-place searching" there): http://live.gnome.org/HumanInterfaceGuidelines?highlight=%28patterns%29 Would certainly help if we had some toolkit-level support as well, though.
