With thanks to Calum Benson, see the style guide for more information about the Units to be used in Gnome documentation, which strongly implies the units applications are expected to be using. (I'd be surprised if the issue of units hasn't be discussed before either here or on the desktop-devel mailing list but my very quick search didn't throw up any pertinent results.)
Usability overlaps with various other issues and it always helps to be familiar with the Gnome Style Guide and also the Accessibilty Guide, to get the bigger picture. (Similiarly developers have implementation constraints, and an ideal user friendly way to implement things might be far from the easiest or most practical to actually programme.) always helps to know a little about the trade offs, or at least know there are other factors you might not have considered. I'd strongly recommend reading the style guidelines after reading the human interface guidelines if one can spare the time.
