I'm using ubuntu here at work, and I don't like the way that the default three section menu looks, and I agree that it doesn't make much sense to put the logo with applications. However, I DO like the way that looks and I think it makes _more_ sense at least, when you use the MainMenu version of it.
I've attached a photo, so that I can illustrate. Clicking the distro logo gives a full "start" type menu, including everything that this GNOME box can do (at least for the gui user). That's what I think anyways.
