There isn't really a standard way, and that of course isn't a good thing -- 
it's on our list to think about for GNOME 3. 

One partial solution would be for GNOME to use proxy icons, where the icon in a 
window's title bar represents the document. That icon can then be dragged into 
other windows to perform operations on the document such as opening, printing 
or attaching it. While that would be a quite a powerful feature, though, it's 
also quite a hidden one, and not very accessible, so we'd probably need 
something a bit more obvious too.
