Make 2 properties in each field, focusSelection, lastSelection and read/update these accordingly upon openField and exitField (closeField mind you that only gets sent when something changes). Keep in mind that before getting the focusSelection upon openField you would need to check to see if the properties already exist and create them if they didn't. For extra credit, allow the user to change the behavior with a right click on the field object. I'd do it myself, but I am too doggone lazy.
