never informed thar the swipe has completed.
I'll try fiddling with touchMove again, but the message isn't sent
consistently on slow hardware and sometimes fails.

I didn't read this carefully enough. I'll try it without a scroller.
Past experiments showed manual scrolling to be too jerky but I'll try it
again.
