The 'sips' command seems to do the trick (from Terminal):

sips -d profile --deleteColorManagementProperties ~/Downloads/Background_mit_Rand_.png

If you could try that and see if you could still reproduce the issue that would be great.

The engine still applies color management to all images (as the screen buffers on macOS generally expect sRGB matched image data) - so at the very least this will determine whether its an issue with the color profile on Mojave, or something else.

Either way, if you could file a bug with the offending image(s) and a recipe for reproduction (although it sounds like its sporadic) we can try and figure out what the actual issue is.
