Klaus is right, although there's a lawsuit against Apple about requiring
their own store for distribution. Apple is protesting that vigorously but
we'll see how it goes.
For Android you can not only distribute on a website, you can send the app
in email, Quick Share, or any other way to get the app to the client.
That's one of the advantages of Android.

I am interested in this as well. I want to create a stack that can be
accessed by about 50 people. All for free. But access has to be by smart
phone, not by going to an always-on computer sitting in a room somewhere.
That would be easy.
Jacque has advised me, but I feel that it will not be possible without my
having to deal with provisioning, app stores and whole knows what else.
This was discussed broadly a while ago on the forum. The project would be
a lot of fun, but is not important enough for me to make that effort.
for iOS you cannot avoid all this profiles etc. stuff, the final app needs
to be in the Apple App Store.
For Android, you can sign the runtime in LC by selecting "Sign for
development only" and put the app online somewhere.
The potential users of that app then need to "Allow software installation"
in the security settings of the cellphone from
that URL, the they can simply install the app.
No way, then?
See above, partly... 8-)

Hi friends,
my customer is about to finish his app (with my help :-).
Some questions, where I am not sure, since I always met these requirements
in question.
Does the developer need an own website:
For Android?
For iOS?
Does the APP itself need a website:
For Android?
For iOS?
I know that one definitivley needs a page to show the privacy policy for
the app.
Thanks for any hint!
Best
