I've lived and worked in various locations around the world and thankfully didn't incur the problems of many early Apple ID users who had, as I did, a single word User Name; not the new must-look-like-an-email-address style. When I finally waited long enough and upgraded to the new style it worked seamlessly. I would have assumed that updating my address would be a seamless and painless process as well, but clearly not. I will definitely NOT update my address if it means loosing content. Ridiculous.
