Thanks for the response Jose - good to know that .htaccess changes should be 
available in a CPanel environment without any server-side Apache restart. 

(On my Plesk-based VPS, I have full control over my instances of server-based 
services - and have to restart Apache for these things to work.)

It turned out to be a browser caching issue - well, that and my SSL certificate 
having expired because RunRev didn't auto-update it when it was renewed last 
month! :-(
