It turned out that something similar was required to solve a bug with RTL text layout in the presence of tabs so it made sense to turn it into a feature. Any bug-finding you do will be greatly appreciated - in my tests, it cooperates properly with paragraph alignment and the like but I'm sure there are subtle combinations that I've missed!
