we decided to have 1024*768 as our min. system-requirement.

We are living in 2002 !
You can buy 2 Ghz CPU's and a 23" monitor (if the money is available ;-),
so one really has to draw a line somewhere.

And if someone's idea of "multimedia" is a 486 (or Mac LC etc...) with
32 MB RAM and maybe a 8 bit, 14" monitor, well, ehmm, sorry ma'am...

5 years ago we de3cided to make 800*600 our min. sys-req.

But the times they are a changing, and so must standards/sys-req.

Compatibility is a fine thing.
But only to a certain degree !!!

C'mon, the "slowest" pc ypu can get nowadays starts at 800 Mhz...

Even if we might loose some customers, we decided to make this strict
sys-req.

BUT if you are developing mostly for schools etc... you really might
have to support
smaller screen-sizes, since schools do not have the most up-to-date
hardware,
if at all...

Regards
