Port 80 is HTTP, 21 is FTP, 23 is TelNet, and so on. Generally it is common to use a "ridiculously" high number for "private" apps e.g. "12009" or the like. Some routers will tell you some of the basic port assignments in their web page or manual. For the most part you can use whatever you like, with the awareness that other such applications may try to use the same port you select, causing potential glitches. Stay away from the biggies (those mentioned above), and you are generally OK.
