You are right : the "-a" option is specific to the OS X terminal and meens that the app following the "-a" option need to be used to open the specified file :

open -a /MesSofts/MC-2.5-i1/Metacard.app/ /Library/WebServer/Celia/ ajax_softs/ime/ime_s.mc

meens that the Metacard.app will be used to launch the ime_s.mc stack.
