Getting images from folder

I want to keep my pictures seperate from the app itself.  I want to be 
able to call the pictures when i want them.  I just can't seem to get 
the scripting right.  I am trying:

put image "whatever" into image "1"

or
put URL "file:whatever/ehatever.jpg" into image "1"
please help
