Had I bothered to think a bit more it might have occurred to me
to try disconnecting the router. And, come to think of it, using
my wife's ancient iBook (recently seen in Edinburgh) up at
our villa in the country - RR 4 worked perfectly well at least
20 miles from any sort of internet service whatsoever.
