Saw this today.  Martin is an intelligent well informed writer.  Its

For many years Mac folks have become aware of how common metrics which attempt to measure "market share" are often distorted in favor of Windows, and there the author does a good job of explaining how that dynamic applies to Linux as well.

It seems Google is among those Linux users, running their search engine with Ubuntu:

   These clusters all run a Google-optimized version of Ubuntu Linux,
   according to Google's open source programs manager Chris DiBona in
   a 2010 presentation at OSCON, an open-source developer conference.
