Actually it turns out that there are several IM "aggregators" that provide a shell to multiple IM systems. For example, I use Proteus for OS X (www.indigofield.com) and I know others that use Trillian for Windows (www.ceruleanstudios.com), and there are a few others out there... Unfortunately with most IM aggregators, some functionality is lost from a specific IM client (for example, Proteus can't handle file transfer from MSN Messenger clients yet).
