It was a day long, of course.
A very interesting question indeed; note however the sequence of activity. First the creation of the heavens and the earth, then light, etc.
At the very end of the first day:
And there was evening and morning, the first day.
So it would seem that the day started just after the creation of the heavens and the earth. At any rate, time began right here, in this set of verses. I believe God must have planned ahead and determined how long a day would be based on where we would be in comparison to the sun, how quickly the earth would need to rotate along its axis in order to keep a stable orbit and maintain the proper conditions to support life, etc. He doesn't miss too many details.
Now if only I could keep track of that many details and have that kind of foresight when programming... it would certainly save me a great deal of "time"!

But if the earth hadn't been created yet, how long was a day?
