I have likewise refrained from even opening my computer (a laptop) to read email until now, a good or nearly 24 hours after the initial conflagration, in order to try to gain some balance and composure and understanding.
I've got a big mouth, by which I mean to convey that I am an opinionated individual (D'oh..., right?). I feel strongly, if not passionately, about issues I espouse. With rare exception, I grant the same to the opposing party, assuming that they, too, feel passionate about their point of view. If one does not respect the person with whom one is disagreeing, what is the point of discourse? Why discourse with those you do not respect? But I NEVER wish to be guilty of character assasination of those with whom I debate. The issue is the issue, whatever it be: it is open to attack, er, debate. The person, however, is entirely another matter: the person is to be respected. Period. And so I apologize to Dan for having offended him. Dot.syntax is certainly fair game; Dan as a human being, however, is not. I respect him as an intelligent human being and as a long-standing champion of the x-Talk family of languages.
