Ian,
We have card-style databases with over 70,000 records. These are primarily
archives - which don't need to be accessed frequently.
At about 5,000 records you'll notice a speed hit, particularly when opening
and closing the larger stacks.
There are advantages to each method but, for your use, either will work fine.
I'd suggest continuing with the format with which you are familiar and change
later if you need to do so.
