Marty- In addition to what Stephen posted, I want to add that if you *do* decide to write the low-level stuff yourself, stay away from setSerialControlString (BZ#1708). What you'll end up with is the port being reset before each new control value is set, and you'll have extra pulses in uncomfortable places.
