Yes you are right: people often use gif, png or jpeg files for favicons but this can be known parsing the html code where you can find something like:
<link rel="icon" href="images/favicon.png" type="image/png">

My problem is with '.ico' files.

Looking at the binary contents of an arbitrary ico file, I see that it contains an embedded PNG picture (I assume this could also be a different format). Maybe you can simple pull that out?
