icons in scrolling fields

I'd like to have graphics within a scrolling field that work the way the Application Overview's main field works.  Can someone explain to me the principles used in making it work? Does anyone have a sample stack that manages to accomplish this? I can't seem to figure it out by dissecting the Application Overview stack... Thanks tom tomh @theunion.com
