Hi Everyone, Beta 1 of version 1.1 is now available. Please read this email in its entirety before downloading.
In this release we've built Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows versions. If you want another platform, please drop me a note off list and we'll upload it. Modifications since alpha 6 include a new error reporting system, the ability to popup an OS drawn popup using a command, and the ability to get both the rect and the effective rect of an object (the latter needed to get the rect of the focus border drawn on the Mac). HyperCard import should be much improved: a number of stacks used to freeze or not open properly and this has been corrected in all cases where we received a report. New database support has been included. The shipping version of 1.1 will support access to Oracle, MySQL and ODBC. This beta 1 version only supports MySQL on all platforms, and Oracle on Windows. The database access features are currently fully functional for all users. However, we intend that in the shipping version Standard and Starter Kit users will have only limited database access, with full access being reserved for Professional users. We are still finalizing this policy: if you wish to discuss this policy change please contact me <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> directly. The documentation has not been updated in this release. There are however release notes covering changes and new features. We will be shipping beta 2 next week, it will include access to the remaining planned databases on all platforms. It will also include new documentation to cover all the new features. At present you must rely on the release notes. For people considering a Standard license, the update to version 1.1 is now free if you purchase a 1.0 license from today onwards. Codes issued from now on will unlock version 1.1. If you are an existing Standard license holder and wish to test this version, either purchase a 1.1 update at this time (now available on our web site) or contact us for a free temporary key to access the beta version. This key will expire when we ship 1.1 at which point you must purchase an update. (If you are planning to purchase an update anyway then doing so now will save on this step.) Note that this is the last release that will give Standard users full access to beta test versions: in the future you will have to purchase an upgrade to be able to access new licensed versions. This change has been made because we have a sufficiently large installed base of professional users to be able to test new releases. At this time we are looking for more feedback on this version than we were on the alpha version. We are particularly looking for bugs on the new features and improvements that we have made. We are aware of a number of outstanding issues in the environment from 1.0, we have improved many things but there remains a number of things we already know about and plan to do in beta 2 - so please don't report your old favorite problems. However, Revolution should not crash your computer and if it does we want reports of this straight away. The new features should also work as advertised, if they do not please report this. We would recommend: If you are a very adventurous user, you should have been testing the previous alpha version. If you are a moderately adventurous user, you should start testing this beta 1 version now. If you are not so adventurous, but are planning to keep up to date you should wait until next week to do a quick check on beta 2. If you are not planning to keep up to date or are in the middle of a project solidly built around working 1.0 features, then wait until we release or you have time in your project schedule. You should back up any important work before attempting to use any beta 1 as some of the changes are very new. All feedback about this version should be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED], or my mail box if its a licensing issue or you are a pro user and want a guaranteed response. Please don't post feedback about the 1.1 beta to use-revolution. And now, having read *all* of the above, the downloads are in: http://www.runrev.com/revolution/engines/build Enjoy!
