alternatives to xml

Hi:       I am starting to learn iBatis and writing some samples to get used to the package.       One thing I notice is that all the configuration data is in XML and properties files (or class resources).       Is there any way of providing this configuration information by other means....such as property classes, DOM trees, etc.?   Thanks, Edwin
