Thank you very much, dear Neil, I will check it today! :-) Besides this I have an idea to create a "colorize it" script, perhaps I can include this idea for the "spiral staircase" modelling tool! :-))) More later, I have some stress this week in a privatley way (parents, girl friend, all friendly people are ill in these cold and rainy days :-) Have a nice week and stay healthy!, best wishes Frank

Hi Neil, hi all realsoft friends, many thanks, that hints will help me:-))

I have build a new scene with a staircase, this time with some rail cylinder and shining material, even a earth bump map into a sphere with reflections material (by the way: How can I change the "brightness" of a color? Through the ColorWindow of a xobject? RGB values and so on, I have found it, but don't know if its the right way!). - I have tried the rotator object, but without great efforts, I will try it again because of a time lack, I will check it at the week-end. I have some difficult to build a rounded rail, banister leading up to the top of the treads (with nurbs, analytic zylinder and so on), but there must be an easier way, the rail should makes a bendform and the "height" of the rail should be changed too :-) I have to do some experience with it, of course :-) - Have a nice week end, more next week, good luck for your projects, Frank Brübach, Germany

Hi Frank,

The spiral staircase from my link was all analytics apart from the nurbs handrail. Everything else in that image is SDS.

I guess you know all this but just in case ...

Stairs in houses or anywhere are built to exact tread to riser ratios. Handrails are also part of those ratios. The main factor is the angle of the staircase but the formula must be followed if humans are going to use the stairs. If you have in mind a tool for architectural drafting then this formula would need to be included. There are many different fomulae but they all get the same sort of results.

Spiral staircases have their own rules but a design factor is that there must be enough head height usually within three quarters of a circle of rising steps. This means, for example, that treads/risers of 22.5 degrees slope need 16 steps in a circle. 30 degrees can have 12 or 13 in a circle.

Interior stairs between about 30 degrees and 50 degrees follow the formula for treads of 20 minus (4 x riser divided by 3). And risers would be 15 minus (3 x tread divided by 4). For handicapped people and for most institutions the slope of stairs is down nearer the 30 degrees end of this range.

A 25mm or so nosing is also part of step design.

The point is that for an architectural tool one might only need to enter the height between landings and distance from the leading edge of the top and bottom steps and the whole thing would be drawn except for how wide the stairs are going to be. Some variation of input might be set-up to apply to spiral stairs.

Sorry, mein deutsch ist kaput,

Neil Cooke

Dear Neil, hi  all, good idea with the staircase building from your picture :-) You have modelled the scene with analytic or sds polygons? - Yes, thats right, this way will do it.

I will write a script to make different steps (staircases), a spiral banister and different distance to the staircases, different step heights, depth, angles of the stairs to each others and so on... A sphere on the top (bottom) at the staircase, later I will animate the scene with the sphere. - Every possibility I will integrate into the script and modelling building. That will takes some time (my free time;-)), but I have the idea some weeks ago and want to realize it. Your spiral staircase with banister and rosty material is very good, such things I want to create. With the script you can change the values of all, so you can modelling a staircase in a very different way and can do new shapes of staircases (I would like it to you in german, haha...).

So you can build very fast various staircase forms for a house, architecture buildings,  a garden with a staircase for the penthouse ... or a playing field for children ("Kinderspielplatz") and "Kindergarten":-) that's the hint I can give you at the moment. More tomorrow or friday... I would like to see if you want to help me for this task, it's very nice! :-))) see you, best regards, Frank Brübach, Germany

Hi Frank,

>the spiral staircase in one of your project. - Do you have any hints

I am lazy so I set up the stairs as simply as I could ...

I think the next time I do them I will use SDS and do some completely over the top Baroque extravagance, marble inlays, etc, throw rust all over it ... but I'm not planning on anything for a while.

Hi Neil, wow! That's the way I am looking for, great picture with a rosty material, very, very good! Such things I have in mind for the project "spiral staircase generator". O.K. the word "Wendeltreppe" sounds quite other like "staircase" and "Wendeltreppe" is a good remembering to alfred hitchcock and alan bates horror movies;-) I like this movies with the thrill coming after going upstairs and looking for the unknown person sitting in a chair (old grandma, dead!), hitchcock was fantastic !!! - Nice to see, you are working with the spiral staircase in one of your project. - Do you have any hints, wishes or advice for the spiral staircase? I will make some new entries for the sliders or functions beginning at the next week-end, I am collecting still ideas and wishes! :-)) - so you wish a function, haha... for my "Wendeltreppe", best luck for you too, Frank Brübach, best regards from Germany

I think that once a new 3D Artist has done the Rings of Saturn, a spiral staircase is next on the list. They are total fun ...

I like the German "Wendeltreppe".

Thanks Frank,
