This cssSelectorRule seems to be outdated, meaning that the css could not be 
applied to a image variation rule defined in STK.

To your questions:
This is used, for the imaging module. The imaging module provides a image 
rendering engine for making various image adaptions 'on the fly' as resizing, 
cropping & watermarking. The rules are triggered by a css selector, meaning 
that in this way it can be defined for any css situation, what image rendering 
rules applied.
Like this one image of best quality can by used (DMS), but depending on the css 
selector where it is used, it can be rendered in different sizes for example in 
different teasers.
