In answer to your question: 
 
1) Links on the existing site do not have extensions to the urls. Switching to 
urls with extensions would negatively impact the search and page rankings. In 
the eyes of search engines like Google the pages would appear to have moved or 
to be duplicated.

2) It means that our urls will always be platform independent. Changing 
technology does not mean remapping urls. As above, changing the page urls would 
negatively impact SEO rankings.

3) It is easier (users are less error prone) when cutting and paste links and 
it is easier to type links etc.. this is somewhat important when other people 
are creating links to the site from other web pages.

4) They just look nicer :)
