If there is always only one component in given area, you can actually redefine 
type of the area from "list" to "single"   (e.g. Templating Kit/ Site 
Definitions:/default/templates/prototype/areas/main/areas   
comments.type=single vs. content.type=list  )

otoh, dialog should be smart enough not to force the selection when only one 
component is defined or available for given user - you can log an enhancement 
issue for that at http://jira.magnolia-cms.com
