The problem is, that the error occurs on a customized tree view. As you write, with the JCR view it works. So its hard to give advice about a possible cause based on a customized tree view.
On what workspace is the view operating? What is the customization about it? Filtering our node? Did you change the triggered command behind the activate button on the ui?
