Hi Serge,

Unfortunately I can't share the code - closed source in-house development :-(
However, I am very happy to answer questions about it if you are interested.

In the end, I think it would be good to mention your requirements to Magnolia
Inc. I get the feeling they don't really understand the problem. I think this
is because they always develop their edit-UI in conjunction with their STK
templates. So whenever something does not work with the styles, they just tweak
the STK CSS and HTML until it all works again.
If they had to make their edit-UI work with really arbitrary designs, I think
they would better understand where we are coming from.

My perception is that magnolia 4.5 and 5.0 have made the problem worse rather
than better. At least in Magnolia 4.4 the edit-bars were explicitly placed in
the freemarker code. In Magnolia 4.5 and beyond you have lost the ability to
place most bars manually, and they are just inserted for you automatically.

However, to make the edit-UI work with our layouts, and to provide a richer UI
experience for editors, we wanted features like:

- ability to place an edit-button anywhere in the layout, not necessarily
within the component or area being edited by it.
- ability to open arbitrary dialogs for a given content
- ability to render a given content with arbitrary template
- ability to open arbitrary dialogs and pages in a pop-up window
- ability to show and hide edit-UI components based on user roles and groups
- ability to show (and change) the activation status for a given content via
the edit-UI controls
- ability to move content between areas (not just reorder the content within an
area)
- ability to create, delete and move pages (not just components) via buttons in
the edit-UI
- configurable style attributes for all edit-UI components
- configurable CSS (per website) for the edit-UI components
- and more...

Basically, Magnolia's automatisms are awesome when they work, but when they
don't work they suck, because they can't be customized by configuration...

Regards from Vienna,

Richard
