And decided to check archetype-catalog.xml in http://nexus.magnolia-cms.com/content/repositories/magnolia.public.releases/ - sure enough it was blank. I switched my repository URL to http://nexus.magnolia-cms.com/content/groups/public/ and used ID "Magnolia - Public repositories". Now I'm able to find the archetypes, but I'm not sure if they're up to date or need modification to work.
