Hello Erik, as Will mentioned there was great performance improvement done regarding ACL check in 4.4.x branch. Upgrade to 4.4.10 should solve your issue (if you have Magnolia 4.4.6 or later), please take a look at http://jira.magnolia-cms.com/browse/MAGNOLIA-4718 and related tickets.
