+1 I think this question has been asked before (more than once), and I think the answer has been NO... I think you used to be able to click on the page-bar to show all the area bars, but that isn't working any more.
I agree with you, and I support this request: make the hiding of the bars configurable, if possible globally as well as on a per-bar level (eg: "initiallyVisible=true" or "alwaysShow=true"). In general my feedback to the page editor is: make it more configurable. The fact that the area and edit bars are inserted automagically means templaters have less control over the bars than they used to with magnolia 4.4... please add configuration attributes to restore as much configurability as possible.
