We solved the issue by going with activation with multiple subscribers and skipping clustering completely. That works like a charm.
However, in the future we might integrate user generated content, so clustering will definitely be interesting for us. I suppose the issue was that I was trying to use the same datastore for the nun-clustered workspaces.
