Can you make a screenshot of your JCR value? Tools -> JCR.
>From that you should be able to retrieve the right variable to create the link.
cmsf.link is the right way to do it:
[#assign linkHref = cmsfn.link("workspace", variable)!]\
Maybe you are not declaring the right workspace at the moment.
