Hello Christoph Thank you for your help; I discovered another solution. First of all one needs to make sure that "Download repository index updates on startup" option is ticked in preferences. Secondly the project needs to be updated by right clicking on the project-> Maven -> Update Project. And thirdly one can download the tomcat server directly from eclipse using the download and install button while setting up the server (However make sure that the server folder is not placed in the project folder)
