its JAAS based authentication so yes if you log in against the container you dont need to login again. or if you wanna read users from some other source you could write a JAAS LoginModule.

This is great to hear!  When you say next release do you mean 2.2 or
3.0?  I don't fully understand what the differences are between those
two.

contribute it back to the project.  We have multiple apps that will be
living on the same servers and will allow users single sign on
capabilities within those apps so we would like to allow users that
functionality for magnolia as well.
