This is the same error i've been getting before I switched off Derby. Derby seems to be a complete hunk of crap. I'd switch off to use the file system or another database for the persistance manager.

Again, it only happens on Linux.  On my winXP box it runs fine (both
with the same configuration I mentionned earlier, Jboss 4.04, JDK
1.4.2_12).

        If you're getting the same error with either derby (yuck) or oracle,
could it be related to the custom code you added to magnolia? Just a
shot in the dark :(
