Unfortunately, people have had some trouble with the database persistence manager that comes with jackrabbit. After the one and only connection it has goes stale (~8 hours), things start to fail. Hopefully the jackrabbit project knows about it and are working on a fix.
Real world recommendations? I've heard good things about Berkley Db. If I recall, only reason it isn't in magnolia community edition has to do with the license.
