I would imagine it would be a performance boost to store BLOB data on
the filesystem. The performance boost would be especially evident in
environments where the db server is on a different machine from the
tomcat/magnolia system and the site relies on a lot of binary file
resources.
Unfortunately, it also means all the repository data is not stored
together and a reduced fail-over ability to another server should the
primary fail.
Overall I don't think the design decision is all that clear-cut. It
depends heavily on your implementation of Magnolia and the
requirements/demands placed on it.
