I don't think my filters are any better than sf.net's, but seeing the 
kind of traffic on the MLs it shouldn't be too hard to filter over 95% 
of the spam and then apply a white-listing scheme: add a spam-assassin 
rule with UML/kernel/gcc keywords - any mail without any of those is 
very likely to be spam if not whitelisted (delay it).

I agree that this would make it clearer for first time users.
There is an awful lot of information there, it's just not very well 
organized: users should be able to browse click download and run UML 
without seeing all the information that developers need to see (and vice 
versa)

Perhaps the community can act as many webmasters, rather than the single 
point of failure. I know quite a few examples where this has worked 
really well. Was this what you implied?
