This was a mistake - in the book, I had a command line with just a
ubda switch, but I actually booted the UML with 'con0=fd:0,fd:1
con=pts'.

This is a bug - that first config should have failed.  If you choose a
console which is not configured in /etc/inittab to have a getty on it,
you can change the configuration, and you will see the effect when you
make inittab put a getty on it.

These don't have anything to do with what you're seeing.
